A programme of “spiritual and pastoral renewal” inspired by John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter “Novo millennio ineunte” began in the Wembley arena, in the presence of 12,000 people, on 26 September. It will move into top gear in October. In a pastoral letter to the parishes of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’ Connor, archbishop of Westminster, has appealed for “prayers for a fruitful response” to the initiative. “I sometimes wonder he said whether we have the resources, energy or the courage for this undertaking”. “Pray for me and for my fellow bishops, that we may be good guides to you. Pray for your parish priests, for the persons touched by our programme of renewal and for those scattered outside the parishes”. According to the cardinal, “anyone, even if not directly involved in the pastoral project, may contribute by prayer” to its realization.
