France: arson an "offence to God"” “

“Criminal acts are destroying Corsica by setting fire to it, and destabilising those working for its development. The perpetrators of such acts are heavily penalising the island and holding its inhabitants to ransom”. Corsica is burning, therefore, not by the “fire of love”, but by acts of arson: so said Bishop André Lacrampe of Ajaccio, in a press release issued on 29 July. Denouncing the fires deliberately started by arsonists in recent days in Corsica, as in many other areas of the continent, the Corsican bishop declared that “the destruction and damage caused [by such fires] arouse grief, sadness, indignation and consternation”. That’s why “we can neither resign ourselves to such crimes, nor connive at them, nor trivialise them, especially if we love this land, and want to serve it in respect for life and the common good. It’s time to wake up”. “I often hear it said that people are attached to traditions – continued Bishop Lacrampe – but what traditions? To those of squandering public money, of mutilating the nature we inherited from our forefathers or destroying the environment?”. “Our Christian faith – he concludes – leads to affirm that God gave us this land to manage it with wisdom and intelligence. And that’s why everything that causes offence to it, is an offence to God”.
