England: shock video on abortion” “

“My Foetus” is the title of the documentary that will be televised on the independent TV Channel Four on 20 April (at 11 pm). It shows a woman in her fourth week of pregnancy undergoing an abortion. This shock video is arousing a good deal of controversy about whether it is right or appropriate to show disturbing images of aborted foetuses. In this regard, Archbishop Peter Smith, chairman of the Commission for Christian responsibility and citizenship of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, has issued a communiqué in which he cites a series of figures: “in England and Wales 481 abortions are carried out every day, for an annual total of over 175,500 abortions. 23% of pregnancies are terminated by an abortion and the percentage rises to 36% in women below the age of 20”. According to Steve Jenkins, spokesman of the Church of England, this documentary “could violate the limits of taste and decency established by the law on television broadcasting”.
