The ecumenical organization “Churches Together in Britain and Ireland” has expressed its “deep concern” about the health of three Kurds who have been on hunger strike in Scotland since 19 February. They are Fariborz Gravindi, Mokhtar Haydary and Faroq Haidari. The three have chosen this extreme form of protest to draw the attention of public opinion to the government’s refusal to grant them refugee status “Even though the Churches do not justify the practice of hunger strike says the Rev. Arlington Trotman we understand the despair of these men as a result of the failure of their appeal for asylum, which has led them to take extreme measures. We think that the danger they run in their country as dissidents may be a just reason for their appeal to remain in Great Britain to be accepted”.
