Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Greek-Catholic Church of Ukraine, was received in private audience by the Pope on 7 December. A communiqué issued immediately after the meeting by the Greek-Catholic Church states that “Cardinal Husar firstly wished to thank the Pope for his support for the struggle of the Ukrainian people for truth and justice and also for his prayers”. The cardinal then informed the Holy Father of the country’s moral and spiritual situation and emphasized that “during the whole time of the crisis, individuals, whole communities and parishes have prayed incessantly for peace, unity and harmony for the entire Ukrainian nation”. The Pope replied: “Yes, it is always essential to have great faith in God”. The cardinal said that the Pope listened with great attention and asked questions, showing he was well informed about the current situation in the country. At the end of the audience he gave his blessing to all the Ukrainian people, and promised that he would continue to pray for them.
