Communicating with European citizens” “

The Swedish Margot Wallstroem, current European Commissioner for the environment and designated Vice-President of the future Executive with special responsibilities for institutional relations and communication, described the main guidelines of the “project for communication” with which the Commission aims to tackle the challenge of improving dialogue between the EU institutions and citizens. There are five main planks to the project: augmenting the presence on the national media; avoiding excessively bureaucratic language; combating misinformation; involving civil society in the EU decision-making process; and speaking with citizens on the basis of the issues they face in their daily life. According to the Commissioner, the first task of the new College will consist in informing citizens about the future of Europe and about the significance of the European Constitutional Treaty, which is due to be signed at a ceremony in Rome on 29 October.
