“Money, alone, cannot solve the problems of the environment, but it can undoubtedly make a contribution”, said European Commissioner for the environment Margot Wallstroem, in presenting the Executive’s proposal relating to the new programme “Life +” to the press in recent days. Destined to become the only financial instrument of the EU exclusively dedicated to the environment, Life + (which will replace the current programmes Life-nature, Life-environment and Life-Third Countries) should enter into force in 2007 and will be endowed with a budget in excess of 2 billion euros for the period 2007-2013. In line with the priorities of the Sixth Action Programme for the Environment (2002-2012), the main sectors of intervention of Life + will be measures to counter climate change, measures to arrest the decline in biodiversity, the reduction of the negative effects of the environment on human health and the “sustainable” management of natural resources and waste materials.
