The allocation of 4 million Euros in favour of the populations victimised by the conflict still in course between Abkhazia and Georgia was approved by the European Executive at the end of August. The aid which will benefit some 150,000 children, elderly people and unemployed will take the form of food aid and medical and housing assistance. The civil war that broke out in the “dissident” Republic of Abkhazia in 1992 has generated at least 250,000 displaced persons, whose situation has deteriorated due to the progressive withdrawal of aid organizations threatened by the mounting instability in the region. The EU aid programme has three key points: the re-opening of 25 holding centres for displaced persons and children; the creation of at least 5000 jobs; and the implementation of the “food for work” project intended to benefit over 60,000 adults.
