EU funds for Angolan refugees” “

The European Commission has allocated 3 million Euros from the European Fund for Development, aimed at covering the costs of transport, board and lodging for the repatriation of almost 50,000 Angolan refugees in Namibia and Zambia. The sum is added to the over 4.5 million Euros allocated by the EU humanitarian office for Angolan refugees in 2003. After 27 years of civil war – which caused millions of victims – the ceasefire proclaimed in 2002 and respected since then has given rise to the mass repatriation of half a million displaced persons who had found refuge especially in Zambia and Namibia. It is calculated that some 200,000 Angolans have already returned home of their own free choice. The European aid also intends to promote activities of prevention and awareness-raising about Aids and landmines, still the main causes of deaths among children in the region.
