In a letter of reproof to the prime minister Tony Blair, the archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, primate of seventy million Anglicans worldwide, accuses Tony Blair of “double standards” and maintains that the government risks losing the trust of the population due to the way in which Iraqi prisoners have been treated. “There is also a grave risk for our integrity”, says the letter, approved by all 120 bishops of the British State Church and sent on the day on which Iraq acquired its independence, also to emphasise “the enormity of what seems to have been inflicted on those imprisoned by the Western forces”. The Church of England has repeatedly criticized the government, ever since the start of the war in Iraq. The letter bears the signature of David Hope, archbishop of York.
