New programme for European identity” “

It’s called “Citizens for Europe”, the new programme of the European Commission aimed – as stressed by the European Commissioner for education and culture Jan Figel – at “enabling citizens to participate in the development of the Union by helping to forge a European identity in them”. The programme, which will become operational in two years’ time, will be allocated a budget of 2.5 billion euros for the period 2007-2013 and help fund actions aimed at encouraging cooperation between citizens and organizations of the sector by promoting meetings, ideas and the means to realize them. “Citizens for Europe” also aims to “fill the gap of communication and interaction between citizens and European institutions”, commonly perceived as the main cause of disinterest in the process of European integration.
