The lobby pressing for the legalization of experiments of human embryos, increasingly vociferous in the Czech Republic in recent times, has prompted the local bishops to issue a statement condemning such experiments. Their strong position was subsequently supported by the Czech Evangelical Church and (on 4 March) by the Council of the Protestant Church. “Such experiments declared the Czech bishops have as their consequence the disturbance of growth or the destruction of the embryo. No human being and hence not even the embryo can become a tool to obtain the benefit of others. Destructive research on human embryos transgresses fundamental human rights, first and foremost the right to life and its inviolability”. “Experiments on human embryos they add cannot even be justified by the fact that there exist so many embryos that have been artificially created and for which no ‘rational use’ is foreseen. Not even the best intentions can justify the elimination of human embryos, especially if the same scientific results can be achieved by other means”. “We appeal the bishops conclude to all those responsible for the drafting of the law to prevent destructive experiments on human embryos”.
