The European Parliament has re-affirmed its total rejection of nuclear weapons and warned Iran and North Korea about their nuclear programmes, but has also asked for clarification from the USA. The Resolution adopted by the EP during its last plenary session in Strasbourg re-affirms that “the ultimate objective of the Union is the total elimination of nuclear weapons”. The EP asks for new disarmament measures, aimed at preventing terrorists from gaining possession of such weapons. MEPs thus urge “a ban on nuclear tests”, support the establishment of a “nuclear-free zone” in the Middle East, and call for the insertion of non-proliferation clauses in all the Union’s treaties. The USA is “invited to clarify the quantity and strategic objectives of its tactical nuclear arsenal in European bases”. The EP, lastly, expressed its “deep concern about the nuclear programmes being developed in Iran and North Korea”.
