Poland: the Churches against ‘Pacs"” “

The Polish Church, together with other Christian denominations, has come out in opposition to a bill in favour of homosexual couples. News of the stance is carried by the APIC press agency, which reports that “in a letter signed jointly with the representatives of the other Christian churches, the Polish bishops have taken a position, on 8 March, against a bill which aims to guarantee some rights to homosexual couples”. The Churches, in fact, have appealed to the deputies of the Polish Diet, the lower house of Parliament, “not to pursue work on the implementation of the law” because, they say, “this would undermine the foundations of social life”. The law, already approved by the Senate in December 2004, must now be voted on by the lower chamber and, if passed, would permit homosexual couples to register their union in an official register and engage in buying and selling. The bill, in its initial draft, reports the agency, also made provision for the possibility of adoption and medical assistance for the partner, but after strong Catholic opposition these proposals were abandoned.
