Removing the mask” “” “

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the start of the totalitarian regime in Yugoslavia. Sixty years have gone by since the Communist party put an end to democracy and seized power. Denying civil liberties and embarking on a campaign of genocide, it inaugurated a period of terror that lasted almost half a century. There was no room for truth. The fall of Communism after 1990 gave hope to the populations of Eastern Europe. With the fall of the Berlin wall it was hoped that the Communist totalitarian regime would also have ended forever and that the Eastern territories would have been able to promote a free and just social system, on the basis of the rules of modern democracy and of the Christian values that have distinguished their history, which is a European history. The entry of the countries of Eastern Europe into the EU gave new hope. Unfortunately, it was revealed that the old forms of Communism had simply changed their outward image. Under the guise of democratic parties, the Communists presented themselves as liberals. In this way they remained in power and were able to spread through all the dimensions of social life. In Slovenia, as in the other countries of Eastern Europe, the old politicians have maintained key positions. The posts of management and government of the public institutions, such as banks, schools, the army, the police and the means of social communication, were until the last general elections virtually inaccessible to all those that did not belong to the ranks of the Communist system The work of suppressing, or stripping of meaning, universal human and Christian values, such as the family, freedom, justice, truth and solidarity, continued in a different way. The heirs of Communism have also appropriated the larger part of the state apparatus and continue to assert that the dignity of man is measured on the basis of utility and profit. They fear, now as in the past, the Christians who by living their life in conformity with the Gospel “threaten non-believers”, in other words, ask them for the respect of the person, religious freedom, human rights and life. And so these Communist politicians and administrators are glad to don the mask of secularism and adopt the logic of utilitarianism of some European states. They enter into agitation when the Church, with the Pope at the forefront, recalls attention to injustices, asks for respect for life, and reaffirms that marriage between man and woman cannot be equated with the union between homosexuals. What contribution can Christians make in this situation that has nihilism and egoism as its foundation? Undoubtedly Christians are called to bear witness to and to communicate truth and hope. Even if the European Constitution fails to mention the Christian roots of Europe, Christians must say that without God man today will be reached and destroyed by an invisible and silent ‘tsunami’. In the past, this devastating wave in Eastern Europe was Communism with its lies: today that same Communism has donned a mask in order to gain entry to the European Union. We need to remove that mask from the regime, so that the face of the people be visible.
