Crackdown on unfair advertising aimed at children

The EU has announced a crackdown on the unfair advertising that targets the weakest consumers, especially children. As part of the draft EU directive to provide the Union with common rules for the protection of “the weakest consumers”, the internal market and consumers’ protection Committee of the European Parliament last week unanimously approved a report on the banning of “dishonest trade practices”, including forms of advertising that directly incite children to purchase a product or that tend to convince parents of the need to purchase the product being advertised. Given the importance of the issue and the European Commission’s commitment, it is probable that the European Parliament will pronounce on the matter during the plenary session planned to be held in Strasbourg from 21 to 24 February.
