CCEE-CEC: check-up on the state of ecumenism” “

The annual meeting of the joint Committee of the Conference of the European Churches (CEC) and the Council of the Episcopal Conferences of Europe (CCEE) will be held in Chartres, in France, from 3 to 6 February. A joint communiqué of the two European Church organizations has announced the meeting. The Committee – set up in 1972 – is responsible for relations between the CEC and CCEE and is composed of six CEC members, representing the Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican Churches, and six CCEE members, representing the Catholic bishops. The agenda of the meeting includes a discussion on the ecumenical situation in Europe today and a series of “final” decisions to be taken for the Third European Ecumenical Assembly which, following those of Graz and Basel, is due to be held in 2007. The Committee will also review the various projects promoted by the CCEE and CEC and the work conducted by the joint Committee for relations with Muslims in Europe. The problems to be placed on the agenda in relations with the European Union and the question of mixed marriages will also be discussed. In the course of the meeting there will also be a meeting with the French Protestant Federation and an ecumenical service in Chartres Cathedral. Members of the joint Committee representing the CCEE are Bishop Amédée Grab of Chur (Switzerland), president of the CCEE, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Greek-Catholic Church of Ukraine, Archbishop Alfons Nossol of Opole (Poland), and Msgr. Noel Treanor, general secretary of COMECE. Msgr. Aldo Giordano will also participate in the meeting as general secretary of the CCEE.
