Croatia: ‘twofold’ solidarity” “

Croatia is mourning its only known victim of the tsunami, a three-year-old girl. “Her funeral was held in Zagreb on 10 January. Meanwhile the collection of funds to be destined to the stricken populations continues. There is no news of other Croatian victims, even though uncertainty still remains about the many missing persons”, reported Father Zelyko Tanjc, lecturer in fundamental theology at the University of Zagreb, in a statement to SIR. “Various aid organization – he reported – are actively involved in bringing relief to the victims of the tsunami. Croatian Caritas and the Red Cross are very active and are doing all they can, also by sending volunteers. It should be explained that when the news broke of the tragedy in South-East Asia, a major fund-raising campaign, promoted by the Jesuits, in favour of families and the poor in Croatia, was in progress. The solidarity of the population in some way responded simultaneously to two emergencies. And this represents a great gesture of concrete solidarity and spiritual communion by the Croatian people”.
