Another tragedy at sea” “

It was the latest tragedy at sea in Spain, with 22 lost in the waters of the Mediterranean off Cabo de Gata (Almería) and 43 survivors, picked up by Spanish coastguards last Sunday. According to Bishop Adolfo González Montes of Alméria, who expressed his opinion to SIR, “all these events must be tackled by our leaders with measures conforming to human dignity and to the common good of the society that receives the immigrants”. González Montes criticises “the political manipulation that is fuelling a permanent and bitter debate on the control of power, which will bring benefits neither for migrants nor for those who receive them. Nothing ought to unite the political forces more closely than humanitarian causes”. According to the bishop of Almería, who is also representative of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference in COMECE (Commission of the episcopates of the European Union), “the situation of insecurity and deprivation of various type, in which so many immigrants have to live in European affluent societies, fundamentally corresponds to a lack of shared legal regulation”.
