In the very week in which the European Commission adopted a proposed law with the objective of extending the role of the European Agency for Air Security (EAAS) “to the formulation of legislation, controls in the sector of air navigation, the qualifications and licences of pilots and the surveillance of the air companies of third countries that operate on the territory of the Union, the independent European Agency for Air Traffic Eurocontrol and the Commissioner responsible for transport Jacques Barrot have officially launched the “Sesar” Programme for the preparation of a new system of management and control of air transport. The programme has a triple objective: optimising the trajectories of airplanes, eliminating congestion and improving the environmental performance of air transport. “Sesar” represents the industrial and technological part of the planned reform of the organization of air control known as European Single Sky, launched last year with the objective of preparing European skies for the exponential growth of air transport already in course.
