Catechesis as place of first evangelization: that is the theme developed in a document of the French bishops, presented to the recent plenary assembly in Lourdes. It must now be approved by the Holy See. In a press release issued on 9 November, the bishops explain that the document “is not a catechism but one that intends to spell out the focal points that should guide the catechetical proposal”. Various questions are addressed in the document. They include “knowledge of Christ, references to biblical texts, prayer, celebration and sacramental life”. It also contains references to the “way of faithfully living the Gospel”. According to the French bishops, catechesis is based on various levels: depending on age, stages of life and ‘social’ milieu (family and school); it is linked to the liturgical year; it is formulated to respond to the need for the sacraments; and it is inserted in the pastoral programme of the diocese. The document approved at Lourdes marks the conclusion of a process of discussion and study begun in 2003 with the document “Going to the heart of the faith” prepared by the episcopal Commission of catechesis and catechumenate.
