The European Parliamentary Committee of Culture and Education proposes to create special legislation to protect children from potentially dangerous contents on the web. The proposal was subjected to the examination of the EP last week. In particular, the Committee suggests the adoption of special provisions for the protection of minors and human dignity, which would not only protect children, but also the telecommunications industry, schools and parents. The ideas proposed include the creation of websites denominated “.kid” with contents specifically designed for minors and controlled by a special independent authority. A further proposal is the introduction of a toll-free number that would provide information for the creation of filters to restrict access to the Internet. Members of the Committee point out that according to recent statistics “the young spend more time surfing the web than they do watching television. At the same time there are some 260,000 million pages with pornographic contents that circulate on the Internet”.
