Greater cooperation between the European Union and the USA is needed on questions regarding the countries of the Mediterranean area: this is the conviction expressed by MEPs on 14 July. Parliament is due to discuss the question during its plenary assembly scheduled for 1st October. According to MEPs, neither the “soft” approach of the Union to the question, nor the American approach, is persuasive: neither the one nor the other has succeeded in obtaining any success. At the same time MEPs express their disappointment at the meagre results achieved ever since a partnership was created between the EU and the countries of the Mediterranean ten years ago. The partnership had been aimed at reinforcing a policy of dialogue between the Union and Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian authorities, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. With regard to this aspect in particular, MEPs call for an increase in policies aimed at education, immigration and economic cooperation.
