On 13 July the European Commission approved the Communication on the project relating to the EU’s new development policies. The main objective will be the reduction of poverty in line with the Millennium Development Goals. To achieve this objective, an essential prerequisite is the promotion in the member states of the role of civil society and development, as the key in the long term together with security and immigration policies. For the first time in 50 years of development policies in the EU, a communion of intentions between Commission, Parliament and Council is planned. It should be recalled that the EU is the institution that provides most funding for aid in the world, and 55% of this aid is allocated to assistance for development.
