Making possible an independent future for children with hearing disabilities, whether total or partial: that is the objective of the 20th international Congress on the education of the deaf held in Maastricht (17-20 July). The congress, which is held every five years, is a great occasion for experts in the field, and others, to meet together and exchange views. Maastricht is known for the presence of institutions of the European Union and for the signing of the treaty of the same name in 1991, which represented an important step forward in EU integration. An important characteristic of integration, according to the organizers, is “union in diversity”, so Maastricht is the right city to achieve this objective. In the three-day meeting the delegates tackled various problems concerning the life of the deaf, including the use of cochlear implants in children, the involvement of family members in the initial intervention, the experience of specialized centres in various States, and the importance of primary education.
