The funerals of the victims of the great fire caused by a carelessly extinguished barbecue that devastated the Spanish region of Guadalajara, causing the death of 11 firemen and destroying 8,000 hectares of pine forest, will be held in the cathedral of St Francis at El Fuerte on Friday 22 July at 8.30 pm and in the cathedral of Siguenza on Saturday at midday. The funeral rites were announced by the episcopal Council of the diocese of Siguenza-Guadalajara which together with its bishop expressed in a communiqué its “solidarity” with the families of the victims and grief for “the loss of so precious a heritage that further impoverishes the area”. In their communiqué, the bishop and the episcopal Council also express their “recognition of the efforts of so many people authorities, professionals and volunteers who worked to extinguish the fire” and “appeal to everyone for responsibility and respect for nature”.
