England: ‘no to assisted suicide’” “

“It is vital that all those contrary to euthanasia do all they can to prevent assisted suicide from becoming law”, said the archbishop of Cardiff (Great Britain) Peter Smith, commenting on the vote at the end of June in the British Medical Association (BMA) which removed its opposition to the amendment of the law that prohibits euthanasia. “Many people of various religions, even atheists, have been alarmed by last week’s vote of the BMA, which by a large majority adopted a ‘neutral’ position on the question of assisted suicide”, added the archbishop, according to whom “a concerted campaign is in progress to introduce euthanasia in this country and its backers are seeking to legalise assisted suicide as the first step. Once doctors are permitted to help people commit suicide, the step that will lead to authorizing them to kill them directly will be short”.
