With a great celebration, a 6-metre-high cross was erected on a hilltop site between the two Catholic towns of Ores and Dragomirovo, in Northern Bulgaria, on 9 July. The celebration was presided over by the bishop of the diocese of Nicopoli Msgr. Petko Hristov. It’s unusual to find crosses on the summits of mountains or hills in Bulgaria. The cross was realized thanks to the offerings of the faithful of the area. A cross had already existed on the same spot prior to the regime, but some hunters, believing that the image was incompatible with the ideology of the Communist state, had used it as a target practice and destroyed it. Over the years since then various misfortunes have been visited on the three men in question and their loved ones. “We are very happy said Bishop Hristov during the celebration that after so many years the cross once again looks down from us from on top of the hill. It was a fine sign that the project to re-erect the cross originated with the hunters themselves of the area. We thank the Lord that the years of Communism have not destroyed people’s faith and devotion”.
