What will be the new name of GMES, the system of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security? The Commission has launched a competition in schools to find a “a more accessible name” for one of the most important European projects for the conservation of natural resources. According to the Vice-President of the Executive, Gunther Verheugen, “the acronym GMES does not do justice to this ambitious project of monitoring the state of the earth. I hope that European youth will propose to us a more inspired name. The competition is open”. Students enrolled in the last two years of secondary school teaching in the countries of the 25, Norway and Switzerland can take part in the competition: entries are open until 30/6, and the deadline for the presentation of a new name is fixed for 31/10. Entry forms and kits for schools are available on the website www.gmes-competition.info. The winners, the announcement of whom is due to take place at the start of 2007, will be offered a journey by balloon in their own region.
