1377 university students and 231 professors are participating for the period 2006-2007 in the 57 Master Erasmus Mundus programmes reserved for non-European graduates who intend to study and teach in the academic institutes of the European Community. The programmes have a duration of 12 or 24 months, and oblige participants to take courses in at least two universities in two different member states. Professors are required to teach for a period of three months as part of the Master of Erasmus Mundus courses. According to European Commissioner for Education and Training, Jan Figel, “this programme encourages the European Universities to pool their efforts to attract the best talents of the planet: it is a benefit for the Universities, for the EU economy and also for dialogue with other cultures”. The scholarships for students – who come from 92 different countries, with India and China in top place – amount to 52 million Euros, while 2.5 million are being allocated to the professors of 45 countries (Americans and Russians the most represented).
