The EU Action Plan for forests was adopted last week. A solemn pledge for the sustainable future management of the forest environment, the Action Plan was formulated by Brussels last year with its “report on the implementation of the forest strategy of the European Union”. The document – which can be downloaded from the website a target=’_blanck’ href=http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/fore/action_plan/index_fr.htmhttp://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/fore/action_plan/index_fr.htm – is subdivided into 4 principal objectives: improving long-term competitiveness; improving and protecting the environment; contributing to the quality of life; and promoting coordination and communication. The objectives are accompanied by 18 key actions that the Union will implement in tandem with member states in the course of the five-year period 2007-2011. Forests now cover 37.8% of the territory of the EU (the percentage is continuously growing), and forestry and associated activities employ almost 3.5 million people.
