Work and poverty in the Third World

“More numerous and better quality jobs; social protection; equal opportunities; social dialogue”: that’s the aim of the so-called “decent job” policy adopted by the European Commission last week to help the developing countries to combat poverty and improve living conditions and employment. Presenting the Communication “Promoting a decent job for everyone” at a press conference, the Commissioner for employment and social affairs Vladimir Spidla declared that “the improvement of economic growth is not per se a guarantee of the improvement of employment or the regression from poverty. Economic progress and social progress must go hand in hand, and this is a challenge both for the public authorities and for businesses”. In collaboration with the UNO, Brussels has announced the publication by mid-2008 of a Report on the progress of the policy. a target=’_blanck’ href=http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/emplweb/news/news_fr.cfm?id=158http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/emplweb/news/news_fr.cfm?id=158
