England: ecumenical week of solidarity

“You donate, we multiply”: that’s the slogan for this year’s Week of Christian Aid, the ecumenical charity of aid to the countries of the Third World, the first to launch a door-to-door collection back in 1957. Millions of red envelopes have been delivered to English homes, and 350 volunteers have been collecting them in recent days. Over 14.8 million pounds (over 21 million euros) were collected last year; the proceeds were sent to over fifty countries in the Third World. The flyers for this year’s advertising campaign contain the image of an enormous vehicle transporting a chicken, a goat, seeds and timber. The image is real enough: the charity explains that 19 pounds (just over 27 euros) is enough for a Bolivian family to purchase a sheep. The example is provided by the family of Sara Rosel, in Bolivia. Thanks to a donation from “Christian Aid” the family was able to buy chickens and a sheep that ensure food and a livelihood for them all.
