With reference to an article published in recent days in the Belgian paper “De Morgen”, in which it was claimed that the Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium supported the bishops in their actions in support of asylum seekers, thus laying himself open to the suspicion that the Vatican diplomat were assuming a political position, a statement in clarification has now been issued by the secretariat of the Nunciature. “The Apostolic Nuncio, in his role of ambassador of the Holy See in the kingdom of Belgium – says the statement – ought not to intervene on this question since it is an internal problem and not a problem of relations between the Holy See and Belgium”. Nonetheless, explains the statement, “the Church has always taken a position in defence of the weakest. The Apostolic Nuncio associates himself with the position adopted by the bishops of Belgium. It is a problem that requires a political solution”.
