France: solidarity of the bishops with farmers” “

The bishops of the Languedoc-Roussillon region have expressed their solidarity with winegrowers in the area in view of the demonstrations planned for the coming days in the main cities of the Region. “The anxiety and suffering they express cannot leave us indifferent”, write the bishops of Montpellier, Mende, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Nimes, in a message to the Catholics of their dioceses. “The crisis – write the bishops – is structural and no longer merely cyclical. It is grave”, and concerns also “other agricultural products”, i.e. the production of fruit and vegetables and that of milk. The bishops of the regions are concerned not only by the economic consequences of the crisis but also its repercussions on “local culture”. The Church has therefore appealed to the local leaders involved in the question to strive “together” to give “future prospects” to the populations of the region. In their message the bishops also invite the Catholic communities of their dioceses to “publicly express their solidarity”.
