“We remember at the present time the victims of the tsunami in South-East Asia a year ago, but millions of vulnerable people are exposed today in Africa to such natural disasters as drought, floods, infestations of insects and armed conflicts”. To counter these “silent tsunami” the European Commission allocated an additional 165 million euros in humanitarian aid at the end of 2005. There are ten beneficiary countries: Burundi (17 million euros), Chad (13.5), Comoros (600,000), Congo (38 million), Ivory Coast (5.2), Liberia (16.4), Madagascar (500,000), Sudan (48 million), Tanzania (11.5) and Uganda (15 million). The operations “will be guaranteed by ECHO, the humanitarian agency of the Commission”, in collaboration with various NGOs and local authorities. The interventions will include measures in aid of refugee populations, water supply, healthcare in case of epidemics, and the provision of food relief in situations of famine. Numerous measures are being promoted in areas torn by political and military crisis, such as Liberia, Ivory Coast and Sudan. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1441 N.ro relativo : 1 Data pubblicazione : 11/01/2006
