“Thy words were found, and I ate them, and thy words became to me a joy and delight of my heart”: this affirmation of the prophet Jeremiah has been chosen as the motto of this year’s “Bible Sunday” due to be held in Malta and Gozo on 29 October. Promoted by the Bible Society of Malta, the event was launched through a message addressed at families, schools and parishes to invite “everyone to let these words of Scripture touch” their hearts “with the same enthusiasm as that expressed by Jeremiah”. The message also hopes that “in an existence full of activities and other voices that often crowd out that of God, everyone will feel the hunger for the Word”. Together with the message, the Maltese Bible Society has published a pamphlet to mark the occasion, under the title “Life”. Its objective, explains the Society, is to “illuminate people on the fundamental questions about the meaning of life through the answers given by the Scriptures”. “The Bible – explain the promoters of Bible Sunday – has so far been translated only into 375 languages (including Maltese) out of the over 6,000 spoken in the world, and for three billion people it remains a luxury at a prohibitive cost”.
