The Asian meeting of the Taizé Community will be held in Calcutta (Kolkata), in India, from 5 to 9 October. It will be attended by several thousand youngsters from various countries of Asia and from other continents. Prepared in collaboration with the Youth Commission of the Indian Bishops’ Conference, the Catholic archdiocese of Calcutta, the (Protestant) Church of Northern India and the Syrian Orthodox Church of India, the meeting represents a new stage of the “pilgrimage of trust on earth” launched by the founder of Taizé, frère Roger, to encourage the young to be bearers of peace and trust wherever they live. The programme includes a series of meetings, exchanges of experiences and common prayer. Frère Alois, successor of Frère Roger, will give a meditation during prayers each day. The first exchanges between Taizé and India date back several years. Mother Teresa of Calcutta herself went to Taizé in 1976, and in 1985 and 1988 two further meetings animated by Taizé at Chennai (Madras) brought together several thousand youths.
