What future for the single market?

The European Commission has published the conclusions of the consultation held last April with the objective of promoting a public debate on the future of the policies linked to the single market. A total of 1514 replies were received, from national governments, businesses and ordinary citizens. The Commission’s Report emphasises the five sectors on which the EU institutions are called to intervene: market entry and innovation; improvement of legislation; improvement of implementation; greater consideration for the global context; reinforcement of information and communication. Other recommendations that emerged from the consultation include: rectifying some of the shortcomings at the level both of legislation (intellectual property, services, financial services, transport, energy) and its application (conformity of member states to EU law); taking into greater account the market conditions in which small and medium businesses have to operate; formulating clear guidelines and strategies shared by all parties involved; and increasing communication both at the national and local level.
