A meeting of the Christian Churches of Serbia was held in Belgrade in recent days. Organized by the country’s Ecumenical Council of Churches, of which the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, two Evangelical Churches and the Protestant Church form part, the meeting had the title “Jesus Christ – light of the world, foundation and hope of Europe”. It was held in preparation for the Third European Ecumenical Assembly due to be held at Sibiu in Romania in September 2007. The programme of the meeting included seminars and a debate on the religious life, with reflections between Catholic and Orthodox bishops, followed by a solemn eucharistic celebration in the Catholic cathedral of the city. At the end of the meeting, Orthodox Bishop Irinej and Catholic Archbishop Hocevar gave a press conference and presided over a prayer meeting in the Protestant church.
