The average Spaniard is married, Catholic and socialist. Only 17% participate in mass every Sunday: that’s what emerges from the survey conducted by the Centre of Sociological Research (CIS) on “social classes and social structure” in Spain. Almost eight Spaniards in ten declare themselves Catholics, but only 17% are practising. 47.3% of Spaniards work and receive an average net income of 1,122 euro per month. They live in homes they own themselves (82.8%) with an average of 4 rooms. The data confirm that 37,389,399 inhabitants over the age of 16 were living in Spain on 1st January 2005. Of these 93.4 % are Spanish and the majority of them women (51.3%). Two persons in three live in couples, even if not always married. Married couples are 55.4%, unmarried couples 6.3%, so almost three million people are living with a partner without being married. The survey further reveals that 4.2% of Spaniards are legally separated or divorced, while 33.4 % declare themselves celibate. The majority live exclusively on their own earnings. 7.4% (2,766,000) earn only 600 euros per month. As regards immigration, the majority of new citizens come from Ecuador, Morocco, Romania and China.
