After over a year of constant growth, the so-called Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) has registered in August a one-percentage point drop through the entire territory of the EU. The indicator – which reflects general economic activity and is based on surveys and interviews conducted in the sectors of industry, services, building, commerce and consumers – has especially suffered from a lack of confidence in the industrial sector and in the building industry due to production expectations that proved excessive in comparison with results. In tandem with ESI, the Business Climate Indicator (BCI) has suffered a decrease (for the second consecutive month). The states that have most contributed to the negative result are (in order) the UK, Poland, Germany and Italy; in Spain, on the contrary, the confidence of citizens has grown in almost all sectors.
