Migration and youth: Ccee meeting

A meeting of migration and youth is due to be held at Sigüenza (Spain) from 21 to 24 September 2006. It will be attended by some fifty delegates including bishops, experts and national directors for the pastoral care of immigrants from 25 European Bishops’ Conferences: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the International Bishops’ Conference of Saints Cyril and Methodius (Serbia and Montenegro – Macedonia), Croatia, France, Germany, England and Wales, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Scandinavia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Latin and Byzantine Ukraine. Other representatives of the Holy See, COMECE and Caritas Europe will also participate in the meeting. For the first time the delegates of the Bishops’ Conferences will reflect on the role and importance of youth in the pastoral care of migrants. In fact the participants will reflect on “Migration and youth: a chance for the Church and for society in Europe”. Of the 455 million citizens of the EU, it is estimated that there are some 40 million regular immigrants in the Union, while irregular immigrants number around 5 million. (su also pg 14)
