Constitution and name of God

Ukraine celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Constitution on 28 June. To mark the occasion President Viktor Yushchenko met the representatives of the authorities, diplomats and delegates of the various Churches and religions in the country. Representing the Catholic Church on behalf of the Apostolic Nuncio Ivan Jurkovic was Father Pavlo Vyshkovskyy of the Oblates. “Ukraine has a future because there is a place for God in its Constitution”, he said, referring to the preamble of the Ukrainian Constitution which speaks of “responsibility to God”. The Catholic priest pointed out that Ukraine “is returning to its first roots”, in contrast to the European Union which recently failed to concede any place to God or to Christianity in its own Constitution.
