EEA3: meeting on ecumenism and media

The annual meeting of press officers and spokespersons of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe will be held at Sibiu (in Romania) from 9 to 10 September. This year’s meeting will take place on the day following the end of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (EEA3), due to be held in Sibiu from 4 to 9 September on “The light of Christ shines upon all. Hope for renewal and unity in Europe”. The meeting of press officers and spokespersons will be opened by a welcoming address by Archbishop Major Lucian Muresan of Fagaras and Alba Iulia of the Romanians. The situation of the Catholic Church in Romania will then be described by the Right Rev. György M. Jakubinyi, Archbishop of Alba Iulia (Roman-Catholic archbishopric). On the following day, 10 September, two sessions of work on “ecumenism and media” will be held in the morning, moderated respectively by a representative of the CEC and one of the CCEE. The aim of the sessions, explains a statement, is to “reflect on the ecumenical dimension of the means of social communication of the Churches, emphasizing the perception that the media have of the Christian Churches, the positive experiences and the difficulties encountered”. The first session will focus on the printed media, radio and press agencies; the second on TV and Internet. An update by the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe is planned in the afternoon, during which Josef Kovacic (Slovakia) will sum up the information sent in by the press officers of the various Conferences; he will also chair the following debate. A session devoted to “Collaboration between the Bishops’ Conferences”, moderated by Francisc Ungureanu (Romania), will follow. The questions to be discussed are: the agenda of the EU and COMECE, Social Communications Day and the website for children on faith, the Pope’s visit to Turkey and the Churches faced by history.
