The media: a new challenge

“The superiors of the male religious orders increasingly feel themselves involved in the work of evangelization through the means of social communication”, said the participants in the 119th plenary session of the Conference of Superiors of Male Religious Orders in Poland in a final statement. “The need to bear witness to the Gospel through the means of social communication represents a new challenge for consecrated persons”, says the statement. The signatories of the final document, alluding to the current situation in Poland, declare: “In recent months in Poland, it has been shown how numerous, due to ideologies, rivalries and conflicts between various social groups, are the situations in which the media are used to manipulate reality, causing unjust injuries to individuals”. They also pledge to “raise the awareness of professionals in the media to make them understand that communication is a moral act”. The superiors of religious orders in Poland appeal for “a responsible exchange of opinions, in a spirit of dialogue based on the principle of justice and reason” and encourage everyone to “make this effort as witness of mutual love and of the unity of the whole community founded on the principles of faith”.
