Czech Republic: on-line auction for the patron saint

An auction on the Internet to finance the restoration of the statue of St. Paul in the cathedral of Brno: the idea is that of the artist Stanislav Sedlacek, who auctioned one of his own paintings on the website www.idnes.cz http://www.idnes.cz> on 12 April to raise funds for the restoration of the statue of one of the two patron saints of the cathedral. The statue is the work of the Viennese sculptor Josef Leimer and dates to 1891; it forms part of an altar decorated with the 12 apostles. In 1991 the statue was stolen, but was recovered in 2006. It will be returned to the cathedral on the 230th anniversary of the diocese, founded on 5 December 1777.
