Switzerland: “The Night of Nights”

Jazz, rock and classical music as accompaniment of the Easter vigil: that’s the idea of the ecumenical event “Night of Nights”, now in its second year, promoted by the Catholic Church, the parishes of the Evangelical Reformed Church and the parish communities of Lucerne, in Switzerland. The “Night of Nights” is held on the night between 7 and 8 April, so between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, in various points of the city. It begins at midnight with the liturgy of fire, followed between 00.30 and 2.00 by the reading of tales on the “night”, in the company of the Arab author of fiction Salim Alafenish and a kanoun player. This will be followed, from 2 to 3, by the projection of “Requiem”: a meditative film made by Reni Mertens and Walter Marti. Between 3 and 4.30, “Music of the Mysteries”: the sonatas dedicated to the Rosary by the seventeenth-century composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, counter-pointed in contemporary jazz performed by Maya Homburger, Barry Guy and Andreas Erismann. Between 4.30 and 5: nocturnal perambulation along the shores of the lake with meditation on Pontius Pilate, followed by the performance of a rock musical by Hanery Amman. The “Night of Nights” will end at Lucerne’s Museum of Transport between 6.30 and 8.00 on the morning of Easter.
