Hungary: preparing for Sibiu

The national Hungarian meeting in preparation for the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (EEA3) was held on 25 January at Gyula, a town close to the frontier with Romania. The Orthodox cathedral of St. Nicholas of the Romanian community hosted the ecumenical liturgies during the meeting. Representatives of the Catholic, Calvinist and Orthodox Church participated. Also present was Colin Williams, general secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC/KEK), who outlined the aims of the ecumenical meeting in Sibiu due to be held from 4 to 7 September 2007. Sibiu, a city rich in multicultural history, also known as Nagyszeben (Hungarian) and Hermannstadt (German), has this year been awarded the status of European Capital of Culture. Some 2100 delegates of various Churches throughout Europe are expected to attend the ecumenical assembly.
