Over 200,000 people participated in the European Employment Days, held simultaneously in 230 European cities from 24 September to 4 October on the joint initiative of the European Commission and member states. The five hundred complementary events (labour grants, recruitment fairs, vocational guidance seminars and conferences on mobility) provided opportunities for the encounter between labour demand and supply for jobs of all types, with a particular emphasis on EU policy promoting work abroad. The events also provided a showcase for EURES, the European portal on labour mobility (http://eures.europa.eu) which currently hosts almost a million and a half job vacancies and through its new initiative “Your first job abroad” has decided to offer five hundred job contracts with a minimum duration of four months in public and private businesses and institutions and private members of the network.
